There's so much to love about this series, starting with the basic set-up of the three books: the first book is told from Karissa's point-of-view, the second from Naz's, and the third alternates between the two. And this is one time that I'm so glad I tried something untested, because I devoured that book in twenty-four hours, then went on to read the other two in the trilogy, all within a work week!Ĭome with me through the jump and I'll tell you why this series so thoroughly captivated me, and why you should give it a chance, too! My reading list had been languishing and the book sounded interesting, so I decided to take a chance. I've also been working my way through the Dark Romance genre since last year, and Goodreads likes to enable my addictions so it recommended that I check out Monster In His Eyes by J.M. A good number of my favorite anti-heroes are paranormal in nature, but I do love a good human anti-hero as well, and what could be better for creating an anti-hero than living in the mafia? Mob tales have fascinated me since I discovered The Godfather movies and then read the utterly amazing, way-better-than-the-movie book. I've told you about my love of, my fascination with anti-heroes.

Smartly chosen, sincerely hilarious, this collection will leave you in stitches. The latest collection of this best-selling series features memorable tales, bits, and commentary from NPR favorites, regulars, and guests. Even if the ice cream is melting in the trunk. Most NPR listeners have experienced at least one “driveway moment”: You’re so captivated by a story, interview, or essay you’re hearing on the radio that you sit in your driveway, motor running, to hear it all the way through. The first half was so set-up, everything had such a deliberate and steady pace to it, and in comparison, the second half turned into a clusterf*ck. I think Walter was trying to do too much and she started to lose me on her story choices. I was buying the whole history and how this magical world functioned and considering this was a retelling, I thought everything was really clever. I thought the people, the magic system, and just all the world-building, in general, was great. Yes, parts of the beginning were slow, but I thought it was really well written. I thought this was going to be a full 5-star book there for quite a while but I didn’t enjoy the second half as much, which lowered my rating. I find it funny because I’m the exact opposite of everybody else. I’ve noticed that many reviewers have complained about how slow the first half of the book was and that the second half of the book is what really brought their rating up. This was a really interesting mix that reminded me of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, but with a lot of new imaginative elements thrown in. In 1833 Thoreau went to Harvard University studying mathematics, philosophy and the classics. Though he wrote a good deal of poetry, it is his essays and longer works that have survived and prospered over the years, revised and adapted to suit each generations hopes and desires. In his earl life, Thoreau thought of himself as a poet but was largely discouraged by those around him and finally came to see it as far too constrictive for the ideas he wanted to explore. His interests were many and varied and his best known literary works, Walden and Civil Disobedience, have had a strong influence on many political and social leaders since they were written over 150 years ago. He is undoubtedly one of the most famous Americans of the 19th century, an ardent philosopher, abolitionist, and historian. Author and poet Henry David Thoreau was born into an unremarkable New England family in Massachusetts in 1817. A portion of the profits from this book will go to support research on cancer prevention. This is the gripping story of a major public health effort diverted and distorted for private gain. Filled with compelling personalities and never-before-revealed information, The Secret History of the War on Cancer shows how we began fighting the wrong war, with the wrong weapons, against the wrong enemies-a legacy that persists to this day. The War on Cancer was run by leaders of industries that made cancer-causing products, and sometimes also profited from drugs and technologies for finding and treating the disease. Proof of how the world in which we live and work affects whether we get cancer was either overlooked or suppressed. Left untouched were many of the things known to cause cancer, including tobacco, the workplace, radiation, or the global environment. The War on Cancer set out to find, treat, and cure a disease. So Viv breaks into a very important server room and uploads a virus. (And maybe crush her enemies just a little.) So she disappears and hatches a cunning plan to hack into and take control of all the computers in the world, which is apparently a thing she can do. At any moment Viv expects to be hauled off to a black site for torture. Her self-dealing charity has pissed off the vaguely defined near-future government. Yes, she got rich by designing Clearview-style surveillance software, but she gives her workers free housing (in “targeted congressional districts”) and gets relief workers (branded with “Liao Industries livery”) to hurricane victims before FEMA. It doesn’t appear to notice there are other parts it’s failed to question. Not that this novel is all “Yay tech billionaires!” It’s all about confronting Viv with the consequences of her own supervillain instincts, deconstructing part of the genius entrepreneur myth. Elon Musk is mentioned by name as a colleague and/or competitor. Vivian Liao, heroine of Max Gladstone’s space opera romp The Empress of Forever, is a tech billionaire. Then Twinkleberry and the other little squirrels each made a low bow and said politely. They also took an offering of three fat mice as a present for Old Brown and put them down upon his doorstep. They made little rafts out of twigs and paddled away over the water to Owl Island to gather nuts.Įach squirrel had a little sack and a large oar and spread his tail for a sail. In the middle of the lake is an island covered with trees and nut bushes amongst those trees stands a hollow oak tree, which is the house of an owl called Old Brown. He had a brother called Twinkleberry and a great many cousins: they lived in a wood at the edge of a lake. This is a Tale about a tail-a-tail that belonged to a little red squirrel named Nutkin. From “The Tale Of Squirrel Nutkin” by Beatrix Potter. In the years between 18 when the United States was tormented by the Civil War and while massive armies slowly maneuvered and grappled for control of the Eastern Seaboard and the Mississippi Valley, the vast and lightly settled country just west of the Mississippi, the western border, was wracked by insurrection and continuous guerilla warfare (Brownlee 3). The author’s thesis can be read at the very beginning of his work: Notwithstanding the title of the book, the author focused not on the west, but rather on events in Missouri and Kansas. Being a fifth-generation Missourian, the historian spent several decades gathering historical data concerning his native state and received a doctoral degree in the field. It was published by the Louisianna State University Press in 1958 and numerous reprintings that followed serve the evidence of the book’s significance.
